HIV
Incidence Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men - Seven U.S. Cities,
1994-2000 [CDC:
MMWR 2001; 50: 440]: The authors report the results of a
cross-sectional survey of gay men aged 15-22 years in Baltimore,
Dallas, L.A., Miami, New York, San Francisco and Seattle. There
were 3,449 who had serologic tests, and 249 were positive, a prevalence
of 7.2%; this prevalence increased with age and among Africa-Americans.
The frequency of high-risk behavior was also high. Another study
done in 1998-2000 among gay men aged 23-29 in seven cities showed
HIV seroprevalence of 373/2,942 (13%): 7% in Whites, 14% in Hispanics
and 32% in African-Americans. The conclusion is that there is now
a high-incidence of HIV among young gay men, particularly African-Americans
in their 20's.
