Annan
calls for action on AIDS at UN meeting [McLellan
F. Lancet 2001;357:2107]: Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of
the UN, opened the June 25 special session on AIDS with the announcement
that this disease is the biggest epidemic since bubonic plague of
the 14th Century. He estimated that the cost to fight AIDS is $7-10
billion/year, but commitments to the global fund to date are substantially
less: U.S.--$200 million of an expected $2.5 billion, France--$125
million, UK--$100 million, and the Gates Foundation--$100 million.
The Cuban representative noted that 22 individuals in the world
have more money than the fund's goal. It was also noted that in
20 years, the disease has been responsible for 22 million deaths
and 58 million infections.
