HIV-1
group O infection in Cameroon, 1986-1998 [Ayouba A, et al. Emerg
Infect Dis 2001;7:466] The authors studied the distribution
of M versus O strains of HIV-1 in 7,544 samples from the Pasteur
Center, which is the reference laboratory for HIV confirmation in
Cameroon. This analysis showed that 258 strains (3.4%) were group
O, and 96.6% were group M. The authors point out that the first
well documented case of HIV infection in the world was a patient
infected in 1966 with group O virus, so its inability to sustain
an important role in the AIDS epidemic is striking.
