HIV a '9' on Richter Scale of Viral Diseases [Nature 2001;412:271]: This is a report in the "Commentary" section which presents a virologic "Richter scale," ranking viruses on a scale in which 10 represents all deaths from infectious diseases due to viral infections in 1999. HIV registers 9.1. Other rankings are: hepatitis B and hepatitis C-8.6, measles-8.3, dengue-5.8, polio-4.7, Ebola-2.8, hantavirus-1.3 and West Nile virus-0.3. The only virus that comes close to HIV historically is Spanish influenza, which killed over 20 million in 1918-19, and smallpox.
