Mission
now possible for AIDS fund [Hale,
P., et al. Nature 2001;412:271]: This
is a comment on the status of funding of the Global AIDS Fund, which
the U.N. team estimates will require $9.2 billion/year by 2005 [Science
2001;292:2434]. Commitments through July, 2001 totaled $844.5 million
with major donations from the U.S.-$200 million, the U.K.-$200 million,
Japan-$200 million, the Gates Foundation-$100 million, and France-$127
million over three years. The report also explains that the U.S.
now spends $20 billion/year on prevention and treatment of HIV in
this country, the European Union spends about the same per capita
with a total bill of $8-10 billion. The $10 million request actually
represents just 0.005% of the gross national product of the seven
richest nations. Also noted are U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald
Rumsfield's plans to acquire $120 billion worth of B2 bombers.
