Hormone Shrinks Fat Deposits in HIV Lipodystrophy [Internal
Medicine News 6/15/01 page 29]: This is a report concerning
a presentation by M. Schambelan at the annual meeting of the American
Federation of Medical Research concerning the use of growth hormone
for five patients with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. Lean body mass
increased by an average of 5 kg and total body fat decreased by
4.4 kg. Two patients had buffalo humps that decreased by one-half,
and 3 patients with substantial abdominal adiposity had DEXA and
CT scans showing a substantial reduction in visceral and SC fat.
All 5 patients had problems with glucose metabolism, and 6 developed
overt diabetes and had to be discontinued from the study at two
weeks.
