Growth Hormone Shrinks Fat Deposits in HIV Lipodystrophy [Internal Medicine News 6/15/01 page 29]: This is a report concerning a presentation by M. Schambelan at the annual meeting of the American Federation of Medical Research concerning the use of growth hormone for five patients with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. Lean body mass increased by an average of 5 kg and total body fat decreased by 4.4 kg. Two patients had buffalo humps that decreased by one-half, and 3 patients with substantial abdominal adiposity had DEXA and CT scans showing a substantial reduction in visceral and SC fat. All 5 patients had problems with glucose metabolism, and 6 developed overt diabetes and had to be discontinued from the study at two weeks.
