Investigation
of Primary Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection in Patients Who
Test Positive for Heterophile Antibody [Walensky
RP et al. CID 2001;33:570]: The authors recently reported
three cases of primary HIV infection in patients with positive heterophile
tests for EBV in a paper that is "in press." The current
report concerns a review of 132 positive heterophile antibody tests
to determine the frequency of these false-positive tests in patients
with primary HIV infection. The results were uniformly negative.
The authors conclude that this type of false-positive test may occur,
but it is infrequent. posted
