Effect of Mutations in Pneumocystis carinii Dihydropteroate Synthase Gene on Outcome of P. carinii Pneumonia in Patients with HIV-1: A Prospective Study [Navin TR, et al. Lancet 2001;358:545] This is prospective study from Emory in which patients with PCP were treated with TMP SMX compared outcomes for those with and without DHPS mutations. The results showed lethal outcome in 9/66 (14%) of patients with PCP strains with DHPS mutations compared with 9/36 (25%) with "wild-type PCP." The authors conclude that these mutations do not confer resistance in vivo.
