Effect of coinfection with GB virus C on survival among patients with HIV Infection [Xiang J, et al. NEJM 2001;345:707] The investigators from Iowa examined 362 HIV-infected patients to determine the impact of co-infection with GB virus C, which was found in 144 (40%). During a mean follow-up of 4.1 years, the mortality rate in the co-infected patients was 29% compared to 56% in those without GBV-C (P=0.001). After adjusting for CD4 cell count, age, sex, and other variables, the odds ratio for survival with co-infection was 3.7.
