NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Cell-Free Virus in Breast Milk of HIV-1-Seropositive Women [Pillay K, et al. JAIDS 2000;24:330]: The authors studied levels of HIV RNA in breast milk of pregnant women in Durban, South Africa. Virus was detected in 86 of 136 samples (63%) from 79 participants. There was a positive correlation with plasma HIV levels and with risk of perinatal transmission.
Comment: It is estimated that breast feeding may account for up to 50% of perinatal transmissions of HIV in developing countries [Lancet 1992;340:585]. This study shows the expected: Levels of HIV in breast milk generally reflected plasma levels, and the risk of transmission correlated with virus concentrations. posted 10/6/2000
