NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Evaluation of the Abbott LCx HIV-1 RNA Quantitative, a New Assay for Quantitative Determination of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 RNA [Zanchetta N, et al. JCM 2000;38:3882]: The authors from Italy tested a new HIV RNA assay from Abbott Labs and compared it with the Organon NeucliSens. Results with 521 samples showed a moderate correlation (r = 0.795). Compared to the Bayer Quantiplex 3.0 system, the correlation with the new assay was much better (r = 0.943). The authors noted that the assay had very good reproducibility, it was simple to perform, and could provide results within seven hours.
Comment: There are now three different methods to determine viral levels of HIV. This report suggests a fourth assay may be added to the menu with the potential advantage of rapid results. posted 10/19/2000
