Successful Treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Related Castleman's Disease with Interferon [Kumari P, et al. CID 2000;31:602]: The authors present a patient with Castleman's disease characterized by three months of progressive painful lymphadenopathy, fatigue, and fever. Physical exam showed enlarged liver and spleen, generalized lymphadenopathy, and a lymph node biopsy showed HHV-8 DNA sequences with typical histological changes. He was treated with IFN-, five x 106 units thrice weekly. This produced a resolution in symptoms and decrease in size of lymph nodes and spleen. At 24 months, the patient was still receiving interferon treatment, and the Castleman's disease was in remission. The authors claim this to be the first report of interferon alone as treatment for this complication.
