Will
Focus on Terrorism Overshadow the Fight Against AIDS? [Voelker
R. JAMA 2001;286:2081] This is a review in the "Medical
News & Perspectives" of JAMA in which the author
reviews the potential impact of terrorism on HIV funding. The review
notes that HIV threatens the lives of 100 million people over the
next 20 years, and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has estimated
a need of $10 billion/year. By comparison, the antiterrorism budget
for the U.S. could be 10 times that annual figure or about $100
billion, including $40 billion for the cleanup in New York City,
$15 billion for airlines and $60 billion as an economic stimulus
package.
