NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Use of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment Services Among Adults with HIV Infection in the United States [Burnam A et al. Arch Gen Psych 2001;58:729] This is a report from the HIV Cost and Services Utilization Study (HCSUS), which is a national survey of HIV-infected patients randomized in a fashion to provide a representative national sampling. The current study is a survey of 2,864 HIV-infected patients receiving care in 1996. The results indicate that 61% are receiving mental health or substance abuse services in the following categories: 1.8% had inpatient hospitalizations, 3.4% used residential substance abuse treatment, 26% had mental health specialty visits, 15.2% had mental health treatment, 40% discussed emotional concerns with medical providers, 29.6% received psychotherapeutic meds, 5.6% received substance abuse outpatient treatment, and 12.4% participated in self-help groups. The authors conclude that these results demonstrate extensive use of substance abuse and mental health services by those with HIV infection.
