NEWS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS

CDC: HIV and AIDS Cases Reported Through December, 2000 [AIDS Reference Guide 2001;101] This is the CDC tabulation of AIDS cases reported for the year 2000. The delay is a result of delays in reporting, but this report is now complete through December 31, 2000. Results are summarized in the tables below as cumulative data by risk categories (Table 1), AIDS cases and deaths for adults and children (Table 2), case rates by metropolitan area (Table 3), and total cases by rank order for metropolitan areas (Table 4):

Table 1. Risk Categories

Comment:
The data show that MSM still account for the largest category of HIV transmission, although it is substantially reduced for the year 2000 compared to earlier years in the epidemic. Most remarkable has been the decrease in pediatric cases, from a zenith of 947 cases in 1992 to 56 in the year 2000. Also remarkable is the reduction in total deaths from a zenith of 50,260 in 1995 to 8,867 in the year 2000. It should be noted that this decrease in mortality rate has apparently not been accompanied by a decrease in new HIV cases, which are estimated at about 40,000/year since 1990. Thus, the number of people living with AIDS has increased from 174,244 in 1993 to 323,270 in 2000. With regard to metropolitan areas, the largest numbers of new cases of AIDS were reported for New York, Miami, Washington, DC and Baltimore, in that order. There was a modest decrease in the total number of AIDS cases for 2000 compared to 1999, and most cities reported substantial decreases in new AIDS cases except for Washington, DC and Chicago, which actually had an increase in the number of cases. It should be emphasized that these data are for AIDS cases reflecting behavior that took place several years previously.
