Nursing Care of the HIV-Infected Inmate: A Monograph Series

Description:

These modules designed to equip correctional nurses with the basic knowledge needed to provide safe, comprehensive care to inmates infected with HIV. Each module provides an overview of a pertinent topic so that correctional nurses have a reference tool readily available for their care of HIV-infected inmates. Topics include HIV pathogenesis, medications, adherence and resistance, hepatitis C and HIV, health maintenance, current issues, and mental health issues. Recent modules offer CNE credit.

  • Module #11:Cultural Competency in Health Care [PDF 1.9 MB]
    Date: 02/2010
    Learning objectives: (1) Describe the role of cultural competency as it relates to health outcomes. 2) List specific tools that health care providers can use to assess and improve their cultural competency. 3) Identify aspects of the Cultural Competence Continuum in relation to a clinical scenario.     Learning objectives: (1) Discuss recent epidemiological trends in HIV infection among the incarcerated population in the United States. (2) Describe the long-term health implications of caring for HIV-infected incarcerated patients. (3) Review the current Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Guidelines for the treatment of HIV. (4) Discuss the newest classes of HIV medications.   • Module #9: Metabolic Complications of HIV [PDF 306K]

    Learning objectives: (1) Describe common metabolic complications of HIV and antiretroviral therapy. (2) Discuss the recommended approach to screening for dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus in HIV-infected patients.     Learning objectives: (1) Describe the neurological toxicities of antiretroviral agents. (2) Discuss the effects that HIV has on the nervous system.   • Module #7: Mental Health Issues in HIV-Infected Inmates [PDF 306K]

    Learning objectives: (1) Discuss the impact of mental illness on HIV transmission and on HIV treatment adherence; (2) Describe central nervous system manifestations resulting from HIV infection; (3) Discuss the association of HIV disease, mental illness and substance abuse; and (4) Identify pharmacologic considerations in the treatment of mental disorders in HIV-infected inmates.(Note: Continuing education credit has expired for this module.   • Module #6: Current Issues in the Management of the HIV-Infected Inmate [PDF 2.4MB]

    Learning objectives: (1) Describe routine laboratory monitoring for HIV-infected patients; (2) Describe preventative measures for HIV-infected patients; (3) Outline recommended consult guidelines for the HIV-infected patient in the correctional setting; (4) Discuss appropriate education for HIV-infected patients regarding proper nutrition and stress management both in the correctional facility and upon their return to the community; (5) Describe necessary patient education content on disease transmission and lifestyle.     Learning objectives: (1) Discuss the impact of hepatitis B & C in the correctional population including the clinical effects on HIV coinfection; (2) Outline the diagnosis, manifestations, and treatment of hepatitis B & C; and (3) Compare and contrast hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.     Learning objectives: (1) Outline the basic components of the human immune system that are targeted by HIV; (2) Describe the process of HIV replication and infection; (3) Discuss the progression of HIV disease as outlined in the classification system; and (4) Describe how HIV/AIDS manifests itself at different stages of disease.
