Minority HIV/AIDS Initiative (MAI) Program DescriptionThe primary goals of the Minority AIDS Initiative are to improve HIV related health outcomes and reduce HIV related disparities for racial and ethnic minority groups.
The MAI provides supports programs in community-based organizations, faith communities, research institutions, minority-serving colleges and universities, health care organizations, state and local health departments, and correctional institutions to help them address the HIV/AIDS epidemic within the minority populations they serve.
MAI has a particular emphasis on capacity building. In addition to direct funding services, the MAI supports trainings and other technical assistance designed to strengthen core capacity areas such as financial management, program development, administration, planning and evaluation. Such efforts have been primarily directed towards minority community-based organizations (MCBOs). The MAI within MCBOs is an effort to strengthen their ability to provide high quality services and expand the number of minority service providers in the HIV/AIDS system of care.
HRSA works through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program to provide care and support services for thousands of HIV infected and affected persons. In 2006, over 70% of those served by the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program self-identified as racial/ethnic minorities. In general, Ryan White HIV/AIDS Programs work to expand access to HIV/AIDS primary health care and related supportive services in low income and underserved communities.
In fiscal year 2008, approximately $398 million was allocated towards the Minority AIDS Initiative. Related Links |
